How do I donate after a disaster?

How can I prepare my home for a flood?

  • Create an emergency kit in a Grab n Go Bag  with essentials like non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, and batteries.
  • Elevate valuable items and appliances to higher levels within your home.Secure important documents and insurance policies in a waterproof container.
  • Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and shelters in your area.

What should I do to safeguard my family and pets?

ALWAYS follow evacuation orders.

If you are in a declared evacuation zone and intend on leaving to stay with family of friends, firstly contact the Evacuation Centre either in person or call to register your evacuation so that the emergency services know you are safe, and resources aren’t wasted.

  • Develop a family emergency plan, including a designated meeting point and communication strategy.
  • Ensure all family members know how to turn off utilities like electricity, gas, and water.
  • Arrange for care of your animals in case of evacuation: Council can house pets at the pound (including Parkes Shire Council pound) if there are no viable options. Welfare services can assist with this once you attend an Evacuation Centre.

I have livestock - who can assist during a disaster?

The Central West Livestock Exchange is a place of refuge for those with livestock who have no other option – conditions do apply

Feed is available at cost. Owners of livestock are responsible for the welfare of animals that are housed at Central West Livestock Exchange.

There is an Emergency Animal Welfare Support Hotline activated for flood-affected communities.

If you are in a declared disaster and need assistance with livestock, please contact 1800 814 647. The Emergency Animal Welfare Support will then delegate a lead combat agency.

Members of the community should also call the emergency hotline if they come across stranded, lost, injured or dead livestock.

What should I do about insurance and financial matters?

  • Contact your insurance provider to file a claim as soon as possible.
  • Document damage with photographs and keep records of all expenses related to recovery.
  • Check for government assistance programs or relief funds available for flood victims.

Remember, safety is paramount before, during and after a disaster.

Always prioritize the well-being of yourself and your loved ones and follow guidance from local authorities at all times.
