Site preparation works on the planned Multi-Purpose Equine Sports Centre in Forbes have officially commenced.
Earthworks and preparation began at the Racecourse Road site last month, with Forbes Shire Council expecting the multi-million dollar facility to be fully operational by May next year.
Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM welcomed the ‘turning of the first sod’, saying it is exciting to see the start of works on a facility that is going to have great benefits for Forbes socially and economically.
“Forbes Shire Council has connected with at least 16 user groups to ensure we get the best outcomes for all those who will be using this amazing facility,” Mayor Miller said. “We also have a Councillor and Community Committee especially set up to oversee this project to ensure that its delivered to suit the needs of the equine community.”
The project saw initial planning getting under way in June last year. Contracts for the work were awarded in March this year with construction beginning last month. “Council is undertaking the earthworks component of the project and we have employed local contractors to complete as much of the infrastructure as possible, including construction of the actual building,” Mayor Miller said.
The NSW Government is funding construction of the $3.6 million facility with Council seeing this as phase one of an entire equestrian precinct and are working with the different user groups to plan for the future of the entire site. The covered equestrian centre will cater for all equestrian sports at all levels including ranch sorting, camp drafting, show jumping, dressage, pony club, Riding for the Disabled and rodeo.
It is anticipated that it will also be utilised for sports education and training and skill development events and will become a drawcard for competitors and competitions. “We just cannot wait to see the finished product, and look forward to the huge benefits it will bring to all user groups and to the town itself in terms of drawing in more visitors to our amazing region,” Mayor Miller added.
