Lone Pine Tree Planted in Forbes

Forbes Shire Council has commemorated Remembrance Day by planting a Lone Pine seedling that is a direct descendant from the original Lone Pine from the site of the Battle of Lone Pine during World War 1.

The tree was purchased by Forbes Shire Council and was planted by Forbes Shire Council Deputy Mayor Chris Roylance and Forbes R.S.L Sub Branch President Bryan Jones next to the cenotaph in Victoria Park on Remembrance Day, Monday 11 November.

The seedling descends from pinecones of the Lone Pine tree collected by an Australian soldier during the Battle of Lone Pine in 1915.

He mailed them to his mother in memorial of his brother who was killed in the battle, and she grew more trees from their seeds.

Seedlings descending from these pinecones have continued to be successfully raised and planted across Australia.

Forbes Shire Council Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM, said the tree was a significant addition to the war memorial at Victoria Park.

“This tree is a direct symbol of the first World War right here in Forbes, and we’re proud to have it as a memorial to all who lost their lives defending our country, particularly those from Forbes,” she said.

Lone Pine trees are considered a symbol of resilience and remembrance and are usually planted at war memorial sites and public spaces.
